We are into our second year of treatment. The first year was filled with inpatient treatments and about 4-5 clinic visits a week. Ava now gets oral chemo daily, a week of steroids a month, and IV chemo monthly. We go to AMC every other week. She gets physical and speech therapy twice a week. I think the first year was actually easier since we were so busy I didn’t have too much time to think of what was really happening. Now I have realized how sick Ava really is. We won’t know until her treatment is over in June of 2010 whether it worked or not. Then the next 5 years is the highest chance that the leukemia comes back. We try to stay positive but every time she falls or gets a cut it scares us. The Doctor told us that the hard part of treating this illness is that if her counts are down, a simple hang nail could kill her. She is handling the treatment well, and we feel that that is a good sign. She has good weeks and bad but we keep on going and deal with the day.
We try not to take anything for granted, she is such a gift to our family. Her strength and bravery keeps us going. We try the best we can to give her a normal childhood, but normal she will never know. No child should have to go through this.

Mikayla has been doing very well with her treatments. March 27th was our one year mark. We are now in maintenance and hopefully next year remission! We too had a little scare when Mikayla’s counts dropped to 300. She was place in the hospital, but thank goodness it was only for the one night. She received some antibiotic drips every three hours and finally her fever broke. She bounced right back after a week. But, boy it brought back some memories. It also was very strange, but yet comforting when the nurses already know who you are. :0) |

Teagan Klingenberg | 2007 Honored Hero |
|
On February 21st 2007, at 20-Months old our Daughter Teagan was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), which was to date the worst day in our lives. She was immediately hospitalized at the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center - "Club AMC", as we called it, to begin her chemotherapy treatments. Over the next year, we lived in a "fog" and prayed daily that we would come through this with a happy outcome.

Update
Teagan is now a completly healthy, headstrong, active and very busy pre-schooler, who continues to develop her individuality. She is the center of our lives, and each day with her is a joy and adventure. She makes our family complete, and the thoughts of having almost lost her still gives us a chill up our spines.
Teagan is currently attending pre-school at the Clover Patch Pre-School in Burnt Hills where she is able to get all her necesarry services and interact with her friends, teachers and therapists.
In September 2008, she along with her brothers (and parents of course) went to Jamaica for her Make-A-Wish trip. She was able to spend a wonderful 8-days with her favorite "friends"... Elmo and other characters from Sesame Place.
