5th Annual Team Teagan 5K Benefit Walk/Run for Honored Heroes Kristen Shinebarger and Hannah Hughes

altSaturday, July 9th at the Saratoga State Park (Warming Hut) | Registration: 7:30 am | Run/Walk begins: 9:15 am

For the past 5 years, Team Teagan Inc., a Saratoga Based non-profit, organizes the Team Teagan 5K Benefit Run/Walk to help a local family with a child battling childhood cancer, referred to as "Honored Heroes". The event, named after Teagan Klingenberg (5), a kindergartner in Saratoga, was the first benefactor of the event in 2007. Each July since then, dozens of volunteers, organizers and 100's of participants line the paths of the Saratoga State Park to show their support. This year again, event organizers at Team Teagan have selected 2 local families to be honored. Hannah Hughes, who is battling Leukemia, and Kristen Shinebarger, who is battling Ewing's Sarcoma. Event organizers stress that every dollar counts, regardless of the economic climate, Team Teagan continues to support a Honored Hero each year by organizing this event. By participating in the Team Teagan Annual 5K Run/Walk, you ensure that each family has the much needed financial support they so desperately need.

ALL proceeds raised from this event are directly donated to the families and the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

With almost 400 runners, walkers and volunteers in attendance, weather in the upper 80's, the 5th Annual Team Teagan 5K Benefit Run/Walk went off without a hitch. 2011 Honored Hero, Hannah Hughes, surrounded by her family was able to cheer on participants from her perch on the back of dad's pick up truck, as Marc Shinebarger, 2011 Honored Hero Kristen Shinebager's dad and Eric, her brother, sprinted across the 5K mark to cheering friends, spectators and participating families. The festive atmosphere at the event could not have been any greater as friends and competitors from several past years cheered, hugged and encouraged each other throughout the morning activities. This year 5 of the 7 honored heroes were in attendance, (photo inset), with only Mikayla Nearh (2008) and Kristen Shinebarger (2011) unable to attend.

Saratoga's Shawn Donegren (28), winner in 2009, again took the overall win with a time of 17:05, followed closely by Jeff Goupil (23) 17:21, and Aidan Tooker (13) 18:36, who came in 3rd overall to take the win in the youth division. Rik Jordan (40) from Glens Falls rounded out the Mens division with a 3rd place. Elizabeth Jones (21) of Ballston Lake crossed the finish line at 20:31 to take the win for the Women's division, with Kelsey Leder (23), and Kelsey Ryan (19) taking 2nd and 3rd as they did in 2010. Jashua Moeckle (13) 21:57, from Scotia and Michael Poirier (10) 22:24, finished strong with 2nd and 3rd place in the youth division.

As in past years, parents cheered their kids on as they competed in "Teagan's Trot", a 50-yard sprint race for Kids 6-10 and little tikes under 5. Jake Welcome, Bradley Sharp and Kimberly Martin placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 6-10 Group, with Noah Datka, Bryn Huber and Casey Clark placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 5 and under group. Big smiles all around as they received their medals and prize bags.
